This editorial project capitalizes on a first sample of the religious art of Maramureș, carefully and meticulously inventoried by Alexandru Baboș alongside the study of the architecture of the wooden churches of Maramureș. Since they alone account for almost half of all preserved icons from Maramureș, Alexander Ponekhalskyi's icons have been separated from the other artifacts documented during almost three decades of tireless research in places of worship, in both museum and private collections, in archives and libraries, in Romania and abroad. In this context, it was also possible to place Alexander Ponekhalskyi in the environment in which he was formed, from which he came and stayed for a while among the Romanians of Maramureș and — what was not known until now! — to where he returned, continued to create for a while and ended his destiny at an undoubtedly venerable age.
